The Predictable Fate of Julian Assange: An Assault Against Liberty

By: Gary D. Barnett

“Withholding information is the essence of tyranny. Control of the flow of information is the tool of the dictatorship.”
? Bruce Coville

No truer words were ever uttered, but the American herd will likely never understand the monstrous risk and extreme danger in what is being done to Julian Assange. This is a travesty that is gaining strength every day due to the now dictatorial powers wielded by the current political class under the pretense of “law” and “justice.” The law is tyrannical, and the dishonest justice is self-serving for the benefit of power and control.

The fate of the heroic Assange is in the hands of the very people who need him silenced in order to protect their state secrets. The preservation of tyranny depends on the control of the truth tellers, and when the truth tellers are silenced, what fate will await the rest of society? The only thing left will be slavery, not in the sense of incarceration and servitude, but in the sense of the people’s mindless ignorance of their controlled existence.

Assange was falsely accused in 2010 of releasing secret documents, and was forced to seek asylum from the certainty of extradition to the U.S. That asylum brought confinement and mental anguish instead of protection. After Lenín Moreno came to power in Ecuador, Assange’s chances for survival diminished, and of course recently he was turned over to British authorities and sent to Belmarsh prison, the Guantanamo Bay of England.

Now, the Trump Administration has shown its cards, and has delivered an 18-count indictment against Assange that includes charges of espionage. This is atrocious, and should scare the living daylights out of any journalist or writer who dares to tell the truth. Anyone with any interest in freedom should be alarmed, and should be screaming at the top of their lungs. The indictment of Assange was outlined and described in great detail by Glenn Greenwald in the Washington Post, as he understands the horrible implications of this liberty-destructing travesty of law.

It seems the U.S. government is covering all the bases in its attempt to stop anyone from reporting on its immoral and murderous activities around the world. Assange may have already been neutralized so to speak, in that he has certainly been drugged, and most likely tortured, to the point of total incoherence. Another very brave truth teller, Karen Kwiatkowski, revealed this information recently, and this exposes a multi-level plot meant to annihilate Assange, and at every turn. In addition, all of his personal papers, his medical records, his electronic devices, including his defense information, will be turned over to U.S. prosecutors. The U.S. government apparently will leave no stone unturned in its effort to make sure that Assange will never again be able to speak or write about its nefarious activities. Total secrecy through intimidation is the objective of this vile government.

Although Julian Assange is the one being harmed, the issue at hand is much larger than any single individual. Without free and open reporting, without the exposure of illegal and heinous acts of government, without constant scrutiny of the political class, all of us will eventually suffer adverse consequences. While governments rely on force in order to control individual dissent, it relies on fear to control the masses. The government’s abuse, torture, and even murder of Assange will send a message to all others willing to expose evil deeds to stand down or face harsh or deadly consequences. This single case will go a long way toward eliminating criticism of the ruling class, as more and more journalists will tow the line of the state instead of opposing it. This is the objective sought by government.

For rampant corruption to exist and flourish in Washington D.C., fear and apathy have to be present in the general population. Apathy seems to have taken hold long ago, but once fear is entrenched, all will be lost. Those who rule count on weakness and fear from the people so that they can sustain and increase their power. This is more easily accomplished than one might imagine, as governments gain much control by claiming to protect the people from any number of imaginary monsters. In this case, protecting the public from Assange, whom they say harmed the national security of the United States. How absurd.

When one agonizes over matters so important to liberty, it is useful to understand the psyche of the common man. Instead of admiring those who do great deeds by advancing truth, they tend to worship those who lord over them, and in doing so band together in ignorance. This is a recipe that brings about domination and a loss of freedom. H. L. Mencken knew of this phenomenon:

The men the American people admire most extravagantly are the most daring liars; the men they detest most violently are those who try to tell them the truth.”

Nothing could be more accurate today concerning the American people in this time of extreme prejudice toward a hero whose only crime was telling the truth.
